Strengthening Communities: Building Strategic Partnerships

Collaborating

In DYCD’s Strategic Partnership Continuum, collaborating is the most integrated and synergistic level, involving shared decision-making, pooled resources, and collective responsibility for achieving shared outcomes.

It maximizes resource use, fosters deep trust, and produces innovative, sustainable solutions to complex challenges. While requiring significant commitment and coordination, the benefits of shared accountability, enhanced influence, and long-term outcomes make it the pinnacle of cooperative efforts.

The Cost of No Collaboration Among Nonprofits

School Partnership Agreements (SPAs)–e.g. SPAs with the host school in school-based COMPASS or Beacon programs. SPAs set out in writing points agreed by the partners prior to the contract award and include the following kinds of terms: the School Principal and Program Director will meet regularly to promote the achievement of agreed goals. School will make specified classrooms, facilities, and resources available for program use, and the program will comply with protocols regarding their use.  Program will coordinate its activities with any other activities that take place at the School. School and Program will resolve conflicts through timely joint problem-solving at appropriate levels. School will encourage students to participate in the Program; Program will encourage student engagement in school.

Some impact
considerations include:

“Through our collaboration with school leadership and community-based partners, we’re not just aligning services—we’re making joint decisions, sharing resources, and holding ourselves collectively accountable for student and family success. This level of trust and integration has transformed what’s possible. Together, we’re really impacting the lives of the youth and communities we serve.”
